An emerald green with shimmering reflections, a powerful and subtle bouquet, many years of maturation and a halo of mystery… This is all that we contemplate at the bottom of the glass.
Formerly produced within the walls of the monastery, the activity has moved several times with the vicissitudes of history. But the trade secret, described in a long parchment entrusted to the Carthusians in 1605 and consigned in a safe to which only the superior of the monastery has the key, remains jealously guarded.
The Green Chartreuse: marketed in 1764, it has a concentration of 55% alcohol and requires 130 plants for its manufacture. It is most often eaten frozen, as a digestif or as a cocktail.
The yellow Chartreuse: made from the same plants in different proportions, it appeared in 1838. Softer, it titrated at 40 °.
The Chartreuse VEP, “Exceptionally prolonged aging”: for connoisseurs, it is the nectar of kings. Over the years, the liquor acquires a subtle and mellow flavor. The bottles are numbered and the corks sealed with wax.
