FRANCIS COPPOLA - Director's Cut Zinfandel 2017
The Francis Ford Coppola Winery is located in California, in the Sonoma County of the United-States. It is owned by the eponymous filmmaker, famous for directing The Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now. Winemaking has been a Coppola family tradition for several generations: Agostino Coppola, Francis Coppola's grandfather, used to make wine in the basement of his New York apartment building using concrete vats he constructed himself. Corey Beck, the CEO and Winemaking Chief, has more than 20 years’ experience in the wine industry. His personal vision for Sonoma County wines can been seen in brands such as Francis Coppola Reserve, Director's Cut and Director's, showcasing Sonoma County’s unique appellations and vineyards. Francis and Eleanor Coppola have always strongly supported sustainability, in their own lives and their many business endeavors. Francis Ford Coppola Winery and the surrounding estate vineyards are both certified by the California Sustainable Winegrowers Alliance (CSWA).
This bottling of Director’s Cut is made of Zinfandel (89%) and Petite Sirah (11%). There are two techniques for growing Zinfandel in Dry Creek Valley. One consists of traditional farming practices and includes the dry farming of mature vines that are head-trained, spur-pruned, and severely thinned in the spring to produce low yields. The other method utilises bilateral cordon spur pruning, on-wire trellising, drop irrigation, and carefully manicured canopies. The Francis Ford Coppola Winery source the Zinfandel from vineyards that are farmed both ways. The wine is aged for 17 months in French and American oak barrels, 20% of which are new. With its unique wraparound label designed after a Zoetrope strip, one of the earliest moving picture devices, each Director’s Cut label is a replica of a strip from Francis’s personal Zoetrope collection.
