Domaine Sylvain PATAILLE - Marsannay Clos du Roy 2023
Domaine Sylvain Pataille, located in Marsannay-la-Côte in the northern part of the Côte de Nuits, has established itself as an emblematic figure of contemporary Burgundy. A trained oenologist, Sylvain Pataille crafts remarkably precise wines, the result of biodynamic practices, careful observation of the terroir, and exquisitely precise winemaking. His ambition: to reveal the purity and depth of each Marsannay vineyard site, with wines that are vibrant, lively, and naturally elegant.
The 2023 Marsannay Clos du Roy comes from a historic terroir located on the hills above Marsannay, renowned for its limestone soils mixed with fine clay. This vineyard, among the most prestigious in the appellation, produces Pinot Noirs of great nobility. The 2023 vintage, both ripe and balanced, has yielded a wine of rare depth. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts and a measured proportion of whole clusters, followed by extended aging in old oak barrels to preserve the freshness of the fruit and the mineral texture of the wine.
On the nose, the 2023 Clos du Roy seduces with its intense bouquet of black cherry, blackberry, and peony, enhanced by delicate notes of incense, white pepper, and precious wood. On the palate, the wine is refined and precise, supported by silky tannins and perfectly integrated acidity. It unfolds complex flavors of ripe red fruit, spice, and wet stone, in a balance of power and finesse that is typical of Burgundy. The long, saline, and luminous finish is a testament to the grandeur of the terroir.
This 2023 Marsannay Clos du Roy can be enjoyed now for its youthful vibrancy, but will reach its full potential after a few years of aging. It will pair elegantly with roast pigeon, beef fillet with morels, or a mature cheese such as Époisses.
