Clos des Lambrays

Clos des Lambrays is one of the five Grands Crus of the Morey-Saint-Denis commune, and probably produces its most distinctive wine. Almost all of it belongs to the Domaine des Lambrays, a tiny part being owned by the Taupenot-Merme domain. One of the elite of Burgundy houses during the first half of the 20th century, the Lambrays estate subsequently experienced several decades of decline. But the change of owner in 1979 heralded significant investments aimed at awakening the one nicknamed "Sleeping Beauty". An objective quickly achieved since the appellation was classified as a Grand Cru in 1981. Today, and since 1996, the vineyard belongs to the Freund family, which continues these efforts to maintain the quality of the production at its best level. Clos des Lambrays is certainly the flagship of the estate, but the latter also produces, in Morey-Saint-Denis, a Village cuvée and a 1er Cru, as well as two white 1er Crus at Puligny-Montrachet, thus bringing the total area of the vineyard. to 11 hectares. The domain practices low yields (28hl / ha) and manual harvesting, then the wine is aged for 18 months in new oak barrels at 50%. The Clos des Lambrays is the result of a blend of cuvées from the three climates of the appellation - Les Larrets, Les Bouchots and Meix-Rentier -, the geological and climatic specificities of each giving the wine great complexity. But first, the cuvées are subjected to a rigorous selection. Full-bodied, concentrated and remarkably elegant, Clos des Lambrays displays a rare aromatic complexity: notes of blackberry, blueberry and raspberry then, with age, nuances of undergrowth, truffle, spices, liquorice and violet.
