Since the beginning of its history, the Gruaud vineyard has produced excellent wine on a very regular basis. The density and structure of this Second Grand Cru Classé are its main qualities. Known for being firm and tannic, Saint-Julien is a wine for aging that takes several years to open. The great vintages of Gruaud-Larose know how to live a long time and we can appreciate great richness, beautiful flesh and a velvety texture.
The modern history of Gruaud-Larose is marked by consecutive acquisitions of several large investors such as La Compagnie de Suez in 1983, Alcatel Alsthom in 1993 and the Merlaut family in 1997. It is Jacques's son, Jean Merlaut who now manages 'hui the property. This family, which has always been rooted in trading, owns no less than nine châteaux, several of which are renowned classified growths.
