A Blanc de Noirs Champagne is made from red grape varieties only. The red grape varieties authorised in AOC Champagne are: Pinot Noir and Meunier. The Montagne de Reims sub-region is known for the production of these two grape varieties. In addition, the Vallée de la Marne is mainly planted with the Meunier grape variety, while the Côte des Bar has nearly a quarter of its vineyard planted with Pinot Noir.

Pinot Noir is renowned for giving body to the wine, while Meunier contributes to the fruity flavours and brings roundness to the blend. Blanc de Noirs Champagne are therefore richer than Blanc de Blancs, but in general they age faster than Blanc de Blancs.
