Château GLORIA - Esprit de Gloria 2022
In Saint-Julien, Château Gloria holds a unique place in the Médoc landscape. Unlike the properties classified in 1855, the estate was gradually formed in the 20th century by Henri Martin, who acquired parcel after parcel of vines from several prestigious crus of the appellation. This patient construction explains today the diversity and quality of its terroirs, spread over the characteristic gravel soils of Saint-Julien. Esprit de Gloria constitutes the second expression of the estate and benefits from the same viticultural environment as well as precise parcel monitoring. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot form the heart of its identity, accompanied according to selections by other traditional Médoc grape varieties. The 2022 vintage, particularly warm and dry in Bordeaux, produced grapes of great maturity, with concentrated berries but capable of retaining remarkable freshness on the gravelly terroirs of the appellation. This generous year gives Esprit de Gloria a broad and immediately expressive profile, while maintaining the structure and elegance expected of a Saint-Julien.
The 2022 cuvée is made from the historic grape varieties of the Gloria vineyard, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, complemented by Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The grapes are selected parcel by parcel to direct to Esprit de Gloria the lots offering a fruity expression and a texture more accessible in their youth. Cabernet Sauvignon brings structure, freshness, and the characteristic blackcurrant nuances of the Médoc, while Merlot provides more roundness and volume in the mid-palate. Petit Verdot occasionally enhances depth and spicy character, while Cabernet Franc adds aromatic finesse and relief. The natural maturity of the vintage allows for measured extractions to preserve supple and precise tannins. The aging supports the material without seeking a dominant woody presence, favoring integration and fruit brightness. The result is a generous but balanced second wine, already enjoyable after a few years in bottle and sufficiently structured to evolve in the cellar.
The color shows a deep garnet with still very youthful purple reflections. The nose opens on blackcurrant, blackberry, and black cherry, accompanied by violet, licorice, and fine cedar nuances. With aeration appear cocoa, sweet spices, and a touch of graphite recalling the Médoc identity of the wine. The palate has a broad and supple attack, supported by ripe tannins whose grain remains fine despite the concentration of the vintage. The black fruit retains beautiful freshness and extends on a slightly spicy and smoky frame. The finish is balanced and persistent, combining blackcurrant, plum, cedar, and graphite without seeking excessive power. Esprit de Gloria 2022 will accompany duck breast, roasted rack of lamb, grilled rib steak, pigeon, or mushroom dishes.
