Château BRANAIRE-DUCRU 1980

The history of this vineyard dates back to the 17th century: it was bought in 1680 by Jean-Baptiste Branayre during a division of the lands of the neighboring castle Beychevelle, another part of the ceded vines later becoming the Ducru-Beaucaillou castle. The grandson, Laurent de Luc, had to contract his name because of the French Revolution, and at the beginning of the 19th century his two sons Louis and Justin Duluc inherited vines and a house; they unify and develop the property and name it Château Braneyre in homage to their ancestors. In 1855, the estate's wine was awarded 4th Grand Cru Classé in the Saint-Julien appellation. On their death the castle will be passed on to several descendants, including a certain Gustave Ducru, then will pass into the hands of different families, who will abandon the operation. Since 1988, the château has been in the hands of a family group chaired by Patrick Maroteaux, who rigorously manages this 50 hectare vineyard and has restored the Château to the rank it deserves. The terroir is superb, made up of Quaternary gravel on clay soil, located a stone's throw from the Gironde estuary. The grape variety is made up of 70% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, and 4% Cabernet Franc. The vines have an average age of 35 years, some being centuries old.
