The history of Château Bélair-Monange dates back to the 14th century, when Guyenne was still under English rule. The domain is then the property of Robert de Knolles (or Knowles), governor of Guyenne, whose descendants will francize their surname in “Canolle”. Thus, the future Château Bélair-Monange goes through the first centuries of its existence under the name of “ cru de Canolle ”. From the 18th century, the estate's wine enjoyed an excellent reputation, and the name of Canolle kept coming back when it came to mentioning the most beautiful successes of Saint-Émilion. Confiscated during the Revolution, the wine is skillfully recovered by the Canolle family when they leave the latter. A triumphant return to business since the 1802 vintage was completely bottled at the property, more than a century before this practice became a standard for great Bordeaux wines . Having since become Château Bélair, the property left the Canolle family for good in 1916 to land in the bosom of Édouard Dubois-Challon , a great figure in Right Bank wine as he also owned Château Ausone . From 2006, the Establishments Jean-Pierre Moueix entered the capital of Château Bélair.
