In 1778 Étienne-Théodore Dumoulin buys from Alexandre de Ségur a piece of the estate of Calon, perfectly located, overlooking the Gironde. The estate is covered with heather that is covered with pink flowers in spring. Hence the name of Montrose. His son Etienne created the winery, planted the vines, built the house of Château Montrose in 1825 and gradually expanded the estate. The success is not long: at the time of the classification of 1855, the wine is consecrated 2 ° cru classé of Médoc. The estate then has several owners before being acquired in 1896 by Louis Charmolüe, who bought it from his father-in-law Jean Hostein (who then owns Cos d'Estournel). The family remains in control throughout the 20th century, represented until 2006 by Jean-Louis Charmolüe. A new page turns then with the purchase, by Martin and Olivier Bouygues, of this vintage, which entered the legend with the 1990 vintage. Château Montrose produces wines of remarkable quality. Its vineyard, planted on a poor soil of serious ferruginous forces forcing the vine to root deeply, gives wines of incredible concentration. The estate is now managed by Jean-Bernard Delmas, who previously worked at Château Haut-Brion.
