Château COS D'ESTOURNEL 2006
In Saint-Estèphe, Château Cos d’Estournel occupies one of the most remarkable positions in the northern Médoc, on the Cos hill overlooking the Gironde estuary. Classified as a Second Grand Cru in 1855, the estate owes much of its identity to Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel, a visionary figure of the 19th century whose taste for the Orient inspired the famous pagodas that still top the cellars today. The vineyard rests on deep mounds of gravel mixed with clay, capable of ensuring both drainage and water retention. Cabernet Sauvignon finds particularly favorable conditions here to develop structure, freshness, and longevity, while Merlot adds more flesh to the blend. The proximity of the estuary tempers climatic variations and contributes to the regularity of ripening. Cos d’Estournel traditionally stands out for deep, spicy, and structured wines, whose power is accompanied by a refined texture. The 2006 vintage, long overshadowed by the monumental 2005, now reveals a classic and refined profile particularly interesting after nearly twenty years of evolution.
Château Cos d’Estournel 2006 blends 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. This high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine a straight and deep architecture, built for slow evolution in the bottle. Merlot brings a more enveloping body and helps soften the naturally firm structure of the great terroirs of Saint-Estèphe. Petit Verdot complements by adding color, spices, and aromatic depth. Aging in French oak barrels accompanies the concentration of the vintage and gradually refines the tannins. In its youth, the 2006 was distinguished by significant structure and a relatively reserved character, requiring time to open up. Cellar aging now allows the black fruit, spices, and woody nuances to integrate into a more harmonious whole, while retaining enough freshness to continue its evolution.
The color shows a deep garnet with the rim beginning to take on slightly evolved ruby hues. The nose combines blackcurrant, blackberry, and black plum with notes of cedar, graphite, and tobacco. With aeration, nuances of licorice, pepper, cocoa, and precious wood gradually appear, accompanied by a touch of undergrowth. The palate remains structured, with dense matter whose tannins have softened without losing their Médoc character. Cabernet Sauvignon provides a fresh and persistent line that balances the ripeness of the fruit and gives the wine a beautiful verticality. The finish stretches over blackcurrant, spices, tobacco, and a slightly smoky mineral note, with a depth characteristic of great Saint-Estèphe wines. Château Cos d’Estournel 2006 will accompany a rib of beef, a roasted rack of lamb, pigeon with cep mushrooms, feathered game, or cuisine featuring black truffle.
