In Bolgheri, Masseto stands out as one of the most prestigious expressions of Merlot in Italy, thanks to a unique vineyard planted on deep blue clay soils. Historically linked to Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, the estate now has its own identity, entirely built around this emblematic plot on the Tuscan coast. The terroir combines compact clays, maritime influence, and favorable exposure, creating conditions particularly conducive to slow and steady ripening. The Merlot develops remarkable density without losing the freshness necessary for balance. The 2021 vintage benefits from an overall very high-quality season in Tuscany, with conditions allowing for ripe, concentrated grapes endowed with beautiful aromatic precision. This year is distinguished by a particularly accomplished combination of power, tension, and elegance. Masseto 2021 thus appears as a deep and sculpted wine, still very young but already remarkably coherent.
Masseto 2021 is made exclusively from Merlot, harvested and vinified according to the different vineyard sectors to preserve the personality of each plot. The deep clays play a central role in the wine's structure, providing density, volume, and aging potential. The grapes are selected with great precision before separate fermentations, then the different lots are blended after tasting. The extended aging in French oak barrels refines the structure and gradually supports the integration of the tannins. The vintage's profile combines significant concentration with enough freshness to maintain liveliness. The material remains dense, but the tannic grain is particularly fine and precise. The 2021 has a still compact architecture that will gain complexity and depth after several years in the cellar.
The color shows a very deep garnet with still intense purple reflections. The nose develops aromas of blackberry, black plum, cherry, and blackcurrant, accompanied by violet, cocoa, and licorice. With aeration, nuances of graphite, cedar, fine spices, and a balsamic touch gradually appear, adding more relief. The palate is ample and velvety, with deep material supported by tight but perfectly ripe tannins. The black fruit remains very precise, while the freshness brings tension and considerably prolongs the finish. Notes of cocoa, fine earth, tobacco, and spices should gain importance with evolution. The finish is long, structured, and persistent, making Masseto 2021 a wine designed for long aging and particularly suited to roasted beef fillet, rack of lamb, pigeon, or cuisine featuring black truffle.
