The plot is beautifully located mid-slope in the "Les Quarts" climate, which is undoubtedly the great terroir of the Pouilly-Vinzelles appellation. The plot benefits from a very beautiful south-eastern slope exposure and old Chardonnay vines. The soils are clay-limestone rich in siliceous crystals which give this wine all its singularity and its incomparable identity. Its aromas are intense with notes of lemon and white flowers. It is a beautiful, long, fresh, well-structured wine, based on a long acidity tempered by discreet and high-quality aging. History of Château des Bachelards; Like many European wine-growing regions including Burgundy with the famous Romanée-Conti or Le Clos de Tart, Château des Bachelards owes its existence to Benedictine monks. It was in fact around the year 1100 that the monks of the Cluny Abbey created one of the many daughters of Cluny, the Arpayé Abbey and chose to plant its vineyard on the place called Les Bachelards. They thus designed the enclosure that still exists, with the 17th century house and the outbuildings of the abbey which, itself, was destroyed during the Revolution. It was a notable family of the region, the Platet, who bought the house and its vineyard still surrounded by a wall. Exceptionally, the Platet family, later Lombard-Platet, remained the owner of the Château des Bachelards from 1793 to 2007! During this long period, the Château des Bachelards was ranked among the best estates in the region, its terroirs were considered remarkable, well located and well exposed in the abundant wine literature of the 19th century and its quality was recognized. This is evidenced by the silver medals obtained at the Universal Exhibitions in London and Paris. Bachelards means "place of God" in the Oil language. The vineyard was certainly replanted after the phylloxera, as everywhere in France, but another rare fact for the region is that few vines have been uprooted since then, and even today, many of the estate's old vines date back to 1910, with the average age of the vines ranging from 60 to over 100 years. Replanting was systematically carried out using mass selection, and today the estate is planted with between 9,000 and 10,000 vines/ha. In 2007, a new owner took over the estate and converted it to organic farming, which is unique in Fleurie and thus makes Château des Bachelards a pioneer in this field. The vineyard has been certified organic since 2007 and biodynamic since 2015 by Demeter. Since 2017, Château des Bachelards has also been awarded the "Fermes d'Avenir" label. In early 2014, Alexandra de Vazeilles, a graduate in viticulture and oenology, acquired Château des Bachelards, one of the most beautiful traditional residences in the Rhône, a vineyard with a large majority of very old vines, planted with top-quality plants. The vineyard extends over 12 hectares, including 6 hectares in Fleurie in a single block around the château, all surrounded by a clos. In addition, there are hectares in Saint-Amour and Moulin-à-Vent. Alexandra de Vazeilles also vinifies and ages Pouilly-Vinzelles, as she loves Chardonnay on limestone, which produces taut and chiseled wines.
