Domaine de Vaccelli - Campo di Magna Blanc 2020
In Cognocoli-Monticchi, in the Taravo valley, Domaine de Vaccelli has established itself as one of the most precise and ambitious faces of Corsican winemaking. The Courrèges family works on granite arena hillsides in the southern part of the Ajaccio appellation, with a rare sensitivity to island grape varieties and their ability to express the place. Gérard Courrèges has gradually refined this parcel-based reading, giving the estate's wines a depth that far exceeds the sometimes sunny image of Corsican wines. The property is recognized for its mastery of Vermentinu and Sciaccarellu, as well as for vinifications that accompany the material without ever masking the energy of the terroir. The vines have been farmed organically since 2008, with certification obtained in 2019, in an approach that seeks both accuracy and soil vibration. Campo di Magna Blanc 2020 belongs to this generation of more confidential cuvées, conceived as concentrated expressions of a precise place. This Corsican white thus possesses the dimension of a great terroir wine, closer to a patient and profound interpretation of Vermentinu than a simple Mediterranean white.
This cuvée highlights a small parcel of Vermentinu, much of which rests on particularly deep granite soils. This soil depth gives the wine a unique personality, with a broader, more enveloping body, but always maintained by a mineral freshness. The grape variety gains density without losing precision, revealing an expression that is at once sunny, saline, and very structured. Available information indicates aging in used wood, a coherent choice with the sought style: to bring volume, oxygenation, and depth without imposing a dominant woody character. The 2020 vintage, now entering an interesting phase of opening, allows the wine to go beyond the simple brightness of youth to reveal more texture, patina, and complexity. Campo di Magna thus distinguishes itself from more immediate whites by its length, structure, and the impression of a Vermentinu worked with an almost Burgundian ambition. The whole remains deeply Corsican, but in a refined, serious, and gastronomic reading, where fruit, soil, and aging seem to engage in a restrained dialogue.
The color retains a measured golden glow, with the brightness typical of Corsican whites that have reached maturity without heaviness. The nose opens on ripe lemon, pear, white peach, fresh almond, and some deeper nuances of fine wax, dried flowers, and warm stone. Aeration reveals a more Mediterranean dimension, between maquis herbs, citrus peel, and a slight smoky sensation. On the palate, the wine shows a broad, almost spherical body, but never heavy, carried by a saline thread that stretches the finish. Texture is one of its great assets: it gives presence, nobility, and a real capacity to stand up to characterful dishes. The finish, long and finely bitter, extends notes of candied citrus, white fruits, and dry minerality. It will accompany grilled lobster, roasted turbot, scallops with citrus butter, farm poultry with light cream, shellfish risotto, or a moderately aged sheep's cheese with great accuracy. Served around 11 to 12°C, it will benefit from being opened slightly in advance to allow its body and depth to fully unfold.
