Louis Roederer Champagne - Cristal Brut Vintage 2016
Founded in 1776 in Reims, the Louis Roederer House belongs to the very exclusive circle of great Champagne houses that have remained family-owned and independent. Its emblematic cuvée, Cristal, was created in 1876 at the request of Tsar Alexander II of Russia, who wanted an exceptional champagne presented in a transparent bottle with a flat bottom, specially designed for the imperial court. Now one of the most famous prestige cuvées in the world, Cristal embodies the House's pursuit of excellence today, under the direction of Frédéric Rouzaud and its cellar master Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon. Its identity is based on a particularly rigorous selection of great chalky terroirs, spread between the Montagne de Reims, the Vallée de la Marne, and the Côte des Blancs. The House's historic vineyards, patiently assembled since the 19th century, are subject to demanding viticulture, favoring biodiversity, soil vitality, and biodynamic-inspired practices. Cristal is only produced in vintages that achieve the sought-after balance between fruit maturity, freshness, and mineral expression. More than a prestige champagne, it represents a particularly accomplished interpretation of the great Champagne terroirs, capable of combining exceptional depth with remarkable finesse and precision.
The 2016 Cristal is based on a blend of 58% Pinot Noir and 42% Chardonnay, coming from 32 selected plots in seven historic crus: Verzenay, Verzy, Beaumont-sur-Vesle, Aÿ, Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, and Cramant. The 2016 vintage was marked by particularly pronounced climatic contrasts, with a cool, wet, and late spring, followed by a hot and dry summer, punctuated by a heatwave at the end of August. The dry and sunny conditions during the harvest, carried out from September 15 to October 1, allowed for remarkable maturity, particularly favorable to Pinot Noir. This brings intense fruity richness and a silky texture to the wine, while the Chardonnay, whose maturation was slower, preserves a chalky tension and saline freshness characteristic of the great terroirs of the Côte des Blancs. The vinification favors a precise expression of each origin, with 31% of the wines vinified in wood to enrich texture and complexity without masking the purity of the fruit. No malolactic fermentation is carried out, preserving all the natural energy and liveliness of the vintage. After a long maturation on lees in the House's cellars, Cristal 2016 receives a dosage of 7 grams per liter, perfectly integrated into the richness of its substance. This structure reveals a champagne of remarkable harmony, where the sunny generosity of Pinot Noir meets the uprightness and minerality of Chardonnay.
The Louis Roederer Cristal 2016 Champagne reveals a bright golden yellow robe, crossed by a particularly fine, slow, and regular effervescence. Its intense and precise bouquet opens with aromas of acacia flowers, ripe lemon, and lightly roasted citrus, accompanied by generous nuances of yellow peach and mirabelle plum. On aeration, delicately iodized notes, dried fruits, toasted bread, and fine roasted touches enrich this aromatic palette, reflecting the complexity acquired during its maturation on lees. On the palate, the attack surprises with its soft texture and immediate breadth, with juicy, concentrated, and remarkably silky substance. The ripe yellow fruits bring enveloping generosity, quickly balanced by vibrant acidity and a chalky tension that crosses the palate with great precision. The perfectly integrated effervescence highlights an almost powdery texture, while nuances of oyster shell, candied lemon, and fine spices extend the complexity of the whole. The finish, exceptionally long, saline, and iodized, gradually unfolds on a crystalline minerality, leaving an impression of remarkable purity and elegance. Already fascinating for its balance between richness and freshness, Cristal 2016 has immense aging potential, which will allow it to develop over the decades notes of hazelnut, delicate honey, brioche, and dried fruits. This exceptional champagne will ideally accompany Osciètre caviar, high-quality oysters, blue lobster, roasted turbot, scallops, or Bresse poultry with morels.
