Created at the beginning of the 17th century by Gabriel de Vigneau, the estate was bought in 1834 by Mme de Rayne, née Catherine de Pontac. This Sauternes cru was classified among the very first in 1855 under the name of Vigneau. The grand nephew of Mme de Rayne, Albert de Pontac , whose history merges with that of the Grands Vins de Bordeaux, will give it its name of "Rayne Vigneau" a little later.

Significant investments have been made by successive owners. Acquired in 1971 by the Mestrezat trading house, then in 2004 by the Crédit Agricole Group, it was bought by Derek Smith at the end of 2015 . The 62-hectare single-block vineyard is famous for its well-known mound to geologists, which includes a wide variety of minerals of Pyrenean origin on a bed of gravel and sand with a clay subsoil.

An optimization plan for the entire vineyard has been implemented by Anne Le Naour , Technical Director of the estate, assisted by advice from the oenologist Denis Dubourdieu . Since 2007, the farm has adopted sustainable agriculture, respectful of the environment. The grape variety of the vineyard is made up of 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon.
