Champagne Adrien Renoir - The Terroir
In Verzy, on the Montagne de Reims, Adrien Renoir crafts champagnes that honestly bear the identity of a Grand Cru village long associated with the depth of Pinot Noir. Coming from a family of winemakers, he took over the family estate with a more personal approach, attentive to soils, maturities, and the precision of aging. The work carried out in the vineyard and cellar seeks to give a more direct reading of the terroir of Verzy, without erasing the vinous dimension typical of this part of Champagne. The estate has notably distinguished itself through organic farming and a desire to vinify with more freedom, allowing each cuvée to find its balance between fruit, structure, and tension. The Terroir holds a central place in the range, as it brings together the two great grape varieties of the cru in an accessible expression, but already very representative of the house's spirit. This Grand Cru champagne does not seek decorative lightness; it asserts a precise matter, a chalky freshness, and a beautiful energy on the palate. It thus offers a particularly clear entry into the world of Adrien Renoir, between the measured power of Verzy and the elegance of a contemporary extra-brut.
This cuvée blends equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Grand Cru terroir of Verzy. Pinot Noir brings relief, fruity depth, a sensation of fleshiness, and the vinous foundation often marking the best champagnes of the Montagne de Reims. Chardonnay balances the whole with its tension, lemony brightness, and ability to lengthen the finish. According to the recent disgorgement documented in May 2025, The Terroir rests mainly on the 2022 harvest supplemented by a portion of the 2021 harvest, with barrel vinification, aging on lees, and a very low dosage of 0.8 g/L. Other presentations of the cuvée also indicate a share of reserve wines and partial work under wood, confirming the idea of a champagne built on texture as much as on freshness. The whole nevertheless retains great clarity, as the extra-brut dosage lets the chalk, fine bitterness, and fruit precision speak. The Terroir thus stands out for its balance between Champagne generosity and mineral tension, in a style that can accompany the aperitif but finds its full dimension at the table.
The color presents as a bright light yellow, with discreet golden reflections and fine effervescence. The nose evokes fresh pear, crunchy apple, ripe citrus, and white flowers, then gains depth with nuances of light honey, almond, blond bread, and wet stone. On the palate, the attack is lively, carried by a delicate bubble that gives movement without hardening the matter. Pinot Noir brings a fleshier, almost vinous sensation, while Chardonnay tightens the finish around a lemony and chalky framework. The wine remains upright, precise, but never lean, with persistence marked by grapefruit, white fruits, a toasted touch, and discreet salinity. It will pair very well with Comté gougères, meaty oysters, langoustines, sea bream tartare, lemony farm poultry, or aged Parmesan. Served around 9 to 10°C in a fairly open glass, it will gain relief and better reveal the depth of the Verzy terroir.
