Château Marsau - Prairie 2020
Château Marsau Prairie 2020 is a unique cuvée in the universe of this estate, which has become one of the most interesting signatures of the Francs-Côtes de Bordeaux. Located east of Saint-Émilion, in a hilly landscape overlooking the Dordogne, Marsau benefits from deep clay soils naturally suited to Merlot. Since the arrival of Anne-Laurence and Mathieu Chadronnier, the estate has gained precision, sensitivity, and recognition among freer and more contemporary Bordeaux enthusiasts. Prairie embodies this evolution with a different expression of the great wine, more immediate, joyful, and relaxed in its structure. The name evokes the landscape around the vines, biodiversity, light, and the idea of a wine that captures a sense of place. In the sunny yet balanced 2020 vintage, the cuvée gains density while maintaining great freshness. It is a rare red Bordeaux in spirit, both serious, lively, and remarkably drinkable.
The Prairie 2020 cuvée is made exclusively from Merlot, the central grape variety of Château Marsau and a true interpreter of the estate's clays. On this cool and deep terroir, Merlot does not produce a heavy or simply round wine, but a more taut, floral, and mineral expression. The grapes come from a vine identified for its singular character, capable of producing an autonomous, complete, and distinct wine within the range. The winemaking approach favors fruit brightness, fine grain, and supple texture rather than massive extraction. The 2020 vintage brings beautiful ripeness, but the cuvée retains an almost crunchy energy that distinguishes it from many more classic Bordeaux. Prairie thus presents itself as a pleasure red, but with true terroir depth and a very personal signature. It is a wine that shows a freer, more sensitive, and more contemporary facet of the right bank of Bordeaux.
In the glass, Château Marsau Prairie 2020 reveals a deep ruby robe with still well-present violet reflections. The nose opens with blueberry, blackberry, black cherry, and violet, with nuances of pepper, graphite, and fresh earth. The palate immediately seduces with its very fine grain, juicy texture, and natural gourmandise. The tannins are present but relaxed, providing structure without hardening the tasting. The fruit remains bright, almost crunchy, with a fresh, mineral, and slightly spicy finish that invites another sip. This red can be enjoyed today after a short aeration, but it has enough substance to evolve for a few more years. It will perfectly accompany roasted poultry, duck breast, veal chop, grilled vegetables, simply seared red meat, or a mildly aged cheese.
