Paul Jaboulet Aîné - Hermitage La Maison Bleue 2020
Founded in 1834 in Tain-l'Hermitage by Antoine Jaboulet, the Paul Jaboulet Aîné House is one of the historic names of the Northern Rhône Valley. Made world-famous thanks to its legendary Hermitage La Chapelle, it has cultivated for nearly two centuries an exceptional knowledge of the terroirs of this prestigious appellation. Its history took a new turn in 2006 with its acquisition by the Frey family, also owners of Château La Lagune in Bordeaux. Under the impetus of Caroline Frey, the House undertook a profound evolution of its viticultural practices, favoring organic farming, respect for the soil, and a particularly rigorous parcel-based approach. The La Maison Bleue cuvée takes its name from a small building with blue shutters located at the foot of the Hermitage hill, which has become one of the estate's symbols. It mainly comes from the eastern sectors of the appellation, notably the lieux-dits Les Murets, La Croix, and Dionnières, whose alluvial soils and pebble formations differ from the steeper granite terroirs of the western hill. This geological diversity gives rise to a particularly seductive expression of Syrah, favoring fruit generosity, aromatic depth, and a silky texture. La Maison Bleue thus constitutes an elegant and accessible interpretation of the great Hermitage terroir, while retaining the structure and aging potential that make the appellation renowned.
The 2020 vintage ranks among the recent great successes of the Northern Rhône Valley, with a warm and relatively dry season that favored early and homogeneous ripening of the grapes. The summer conditions allowed the Syrah to develop remarkable aromatic concentration while maintaining essential freshness for the balance of great Hermitages. La Maison Bleue 2020 is made exclusively from Syrah, coming from vines aged about 40 to 60 years, mainly located in the eastern part of the hill, notably in the Murets sector. The deep soils, composed of alluvial formations and calcareous colluviums, promote regular water supply and contribute to the characteristic suppleness of this cuvée. Cultivated according to organic and biodynamic principles, the vines are hand-harvested, with careful selection of the clusters directly in the vineyard. After complete destemming, fermentation is accompanied by maceration of about three to four weeks, with gentle extractions aimed at preserving the finesse of the tannins. The wine is then aged for about twelve months in French oak barrels, 20% of which are new wood, to refine its structure and enrich its complexity without overpowering the fruit expression. This precise vinification produces a Hermitage of great depth, but whose texture and balance make it particularly seductive from its first years.
The Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Maison Bleue 2020 reveals an intense and deep purple robe with still strong violet reflections. Its generous bouquet opens with aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, and ripe blueberry, accompanied by floral nuances of violet and delicate touches of licorice. Upon aeration, notes of black raspberry, black olive, pepper, and espresso enrich this aromatic palette, while a subtle smoky dimension adds depth and character. On the palate, the attack is ample and enveloping, with concentrated matter that maintains remarkable fluidity. The tannins, abundant but particularly fine, outline an elegant and velvety structure, while well-integrated freshness balances the vintage's natural richness. The flavors of black fruits continue with nuances of spices, graphite, and cocoa, revealing a Syrah both powerful and refined. The finish, long and persistent, is distinguished by its black olive accents, delicately powdered tannins, and a savory expression that prolongs the tasting. Already accessible after one to two hours of aeration, this Hermitage has excellent aging potential and should gain complexity over the next fifteen years, gradually developing aromas of fine leather, truffle, and undergrowth. It will ideally accompany a roasted rack of lamb, duck breast, aged rib steak, pigeon with porcini mushrooms, or venison fillet.
