On the historic slopes of the Hermitage hill, above Tain-l’Hermitage, La Chapelle draws its identity from several major named plots of the appellation. Les Bessards, Le Méal, Les Rocoules, and Les Greffieux contribute to the blend, with vines aged approximately 40 to 100 years and a remarkable diversity of soils. The granite sectors give the Syrah depth, tension, and a characteristic mineral framework, while the more stony or clayey areas enrich the texture and complexity of the wine. The estate belongs to the Frey family, who continue precise work on these emblematic plots and on preserving their plant heritage. The Syrah is worked here as the interpreter of a terroir rather than as a simple varietal expression, each origin intended to complement the others in the final blend. The 2020 vintage is part of an early year, after a mild winter and budburst about fifteen days ahead. This generous ripeness gives birth to a deep and concentrated Chapelle, whose richness remains supported by the natural freshness of the great Hermitage terroirs.
Hermitage La Chapelle 2020 is made exclusively from Syrah. The grapes from the different sectors of the hillside are worked according to their personality before the blend seeks balance between density, finesse, and length. The old vines bring natural concentration and depth that allow building the wine without seeking demonstrative extraction. The sunny character of the vintage is expressed by a generous material, but the granite base and the natural structure of the Syrah maintain precise tension on the palate. The aging progressively accompanies this power and helps soften the tannins without masking the stony and spicy character of the terroir. In its youth, the 2020 still has a tight architecture and an important aromatic reserve that justify several additional years in the cellar. Its balance between fruit maturity, tannic grain, and freshness gives it the qualities necessary to evolve harmoniously over several decades.
The color shows a deep purple hue, almost black at the core, still marked by the youth of the vintage. The nose develops on blackcurrant, blackberry, and blueberry, accompanied by violet, black pepper, and licorice. Aeration gradually reveals graphite, black olive, dry herbs, and fine smoky nuances characteristic of northern Syrah. The palate is dense and enveloping, with tight tannins but a particularly fine grain that structures a generous material. A mineral freshness crosses the black fruit and gives length to the whole despite the concentration of the vintage. The finish persists on spices, graphite, licorice, and a stony dimension called to gain even more complexity with time. Hermitage La Chapelle 2020 will accompany a matured rib steak, a roasted rack of lamb, pigeon, royal hare, or game served with wild mushrooms.
