BEN NEVIS - Chur Leis - 46%
Ben Nevis Distillery , established in 1825, is one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland. The distillery is nestled at the foot of Scotland's highest mountain , Ben Nevis, which sits 1,345m above sea level. This towering mountain provides an impressive backdrop for a showcase. traditional Scottish craftsmanship. The main ingredients of a quality whiskey are water, barley and yeast, with a little peat smoke.
Downstream of Ben Nevis there are two small lochs (Coire Leis and Coire na'Ciste) providing a constant and unceasing source of pure, clean water . Barley is clean and plump , fully rounded and quite dry, containing just the right amount of protein . Yeast has the texture of a dough or "mastic" and is essential to the fermentation process. Peat comes into whiskey through water passing through bogs on its way down the mountain and through the smell of fires lit during the manufacturing process. Since 1989, the Ben Nevis distillery has belonged to Tokyo-based Nikka Whiskey Distilling .
Released in 2021, Ben Nevis Coire Leis is named after one of the distillery's main water sources, located on Ben Nevis itself. It is a Single Malt without mention of age bottled at 46% after aging in first fill bourbon barrels and “exclusive oak”.
