Markus Molitor - Urziger Wurzgarten - Riesling - Auslese*** GK 2015
Weingut Markus Molitor is located in Rheinland-Pfalz, in the Moselle region of Germany . The winery was acquired by Markus Molitor in 1984, who carried out extensive renovations between 2009 and 2012. The winery and its eponymous owner attracted worldwide attention in 2015 and earned the nickname "Herr 300 Punkte" ( Mister 300 points) when three Auslese Rieslings from his 2013 vintage received a 100 point rating from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. The estate cultivates vines on 15 different sites in Moselle and Saar, the vast majority being planted with Riesling. Markus Molitor uses color-coded capsules according to the style of the wine: white capsules denote dry wines, off-dry wines have a gray-green capsule while naturally sweet and botrytized wines have a golden capsule.
The term Ürziger Würzgarten describes a German vineyard in Ürzig, a town in the Bernkastel district of Moselle. The steep site of approximately 62 hectares, oriented from south to southeast, has a weathered soil of unique red slate with a high proportion of rock, which is rare on the Moselle. Due to the special soil, the wines from Ürziger Würzgarten are delicately spicy, fruity, with structure and fine acidity.
Auslese is made from grapes that have a must weight of 83-110 Oechsle (the hydrometric scale measuring the density of grape must) which equates to 191-260 g/L of residual sugar, and where the grapes are harvested manually with noble rot.
Grape variety: 100% Riesling
