Armagnac Laterrade - 1974 - Domaine Les Galaouères - Barrel Proof - 44.7%
The Armagnac Laterrade collection was born from patient research conducted in the estates and old cellars of Gascony. Trained as a sommelier, Vincent Laterrade became known for rediscovering old eaux-de-vie whose origin and history could still be precisely established. The vintages are preserved under the name of the estate that produced them, without blending between different years, in order to preserve the particular character of each harvest. Domaine Les Galaouères is located in Bas-Armagnac, the western territory of the appellation historically sought after for the finesse and aging potential of its eaux-de-vie. The house acts with restraint, letting time and wood build the identity of the batch rather than trying to reproduce a uniform style. Bottlings are done without coloring or oenological artifices, with a preference for the natural degrees reached at the end of aging. This fidelity to origin gives the old Laterrade vintages a heritage dimension as well as a gustatory one.
Exclusively from the 1974 harvest of Domaine Les Galaouères, this Armagnac has passed through several decades in wood before reaching its bottling balance. During this slow maturation, evaporation gradually lowered its alcohol content while concentrating its matter and refining its texture. The degree of 44.7% is that of the barrel at the time of bottling, without adding water to bring the eau-de-vie to a standardized value. This choice preserves the tension, depth, and nuances acquired in the cellar, while respecting the personality unique to the vintage. With age, the original fruit has moved away from its most immediate expression to join a register of dried fruits, candied citrus, spices, and polished wood. The long contact with oak brings structure, but the maturity of the batch now seems to have melted the tannins into a softer texture. This bottle thus tells less the power of the distillation than the progressive transformation of an eau-de-vie by time.
The color shows a dark amber, nuanced with copper and mahogany, with a depth that announces prolonged aging. The first nose evokes prune, dried fig, and candied orange, soon joined by walnut, cocoa, and a touch of old wax. Aeration reveals more complex notes of blond tobacco, cinnamon, roasted coffee, and sandalwood. On the palate, the attack is ample and precise, carried by the 44.7% without the heat overpowering the aromas. The texture combines a certain density with persistent freshness, while stewed black fruits mingle with spices, roasted almond, and a delicate rancio. The finish stretches on citrus zest, dried walnut, bitter cocoa, and a slight saline sensation that prolongs the whole. Served neat in a tulip glass, this Armagnac can also accompany a walnut tart, a lightly sweetened dark chocolate dessert, aged Comté cheese, or some dried fruits.
