BARBANCOURT - Limited Edition - Cuvée Liberté - Libète - 8 years - 43%
Barbancourt Cuvée Liberté, or Libète in Haitian Creole, is a limited edition that celebrates both the history of Haiti and the expertise of a legendary house. Founded in 1862, the Barbancourt distillery is one of the major references of Haitian rum, with a unique identity based on pure sugarcane juice and a distillation method inspired by the Charente tradition. This cuvée pays tribute to the 220 years of Haiti's independence, in a collector's bottle featuring the colors of the national flag. The edition is all the more desirable as it remains limited, with a very restricted distribution on the European market. Barbancourt here signs a rum that is both heritage-rich, symbolic, and immediately recognizable. The Cuvée Liberté appeals as much to tasting rum enthusiasts as to collectors sensitive to commemorative editions. It is a strong bottle, full of meaning, that unites memory, elegance, and tasting pleasure.
This limited edition is based on Barbancourt's famous 5-star Special Reserve, aged 8 years, then enhanced by a finish of several months in new Limousin oak barrels. This additional wood aging brings more roundness, depth, and aromatic complexity. Made from pure sugarcane juice, this rum retains a marked agricultural identity, with a more expressive and lively material than a classic molasses rum. The Madame Mevs cane variety, regularly associated with Barbancourt, contributes to the house's aromatic signature. Tropical aging intensifies concentration, wood patina, and aroma richness. The 43% strength offers a very nice balance between power, softness, and accessibility. This Cuvée Liberté thus stands out by a more ambitious construction than the classic version, while maintaining Barbancourt's elegant, dry, and refined style.
In the glass, Barbancourt Cuvée Liberté 8 years reveals a bright amber robe with golden and copper reflections. The nose opens with notes of vanilla, dried flowers, fine wood, blond caramel, and ripe fruits. Upon aeration, nuances of soft spices, blond tobacco, light honey, and toasted oak enrich the ensemble. The palate is round, supple, and elegant, with a beautiful presence without heaviness. The new Limousin oak finish brings a more marked woody sensation, but well integrated, supporting the texture and extending the finish. The tasting ends on vanilla, floral, slightly spicy, and finely tannic notes. This rum will be ideal neat, in a tulip glass, after a few minutes of aeration, or accompanied by dark chocolate, a walnut tart, a vanilla dessert, a mild cigar, or a contemplative tasting moment.
