Champagne Hélène Charbaut - La Meunière 2022
Based in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Hélène Charbaut is precisely developing her own estate, initiated in 2020 from a demanding selection of family parcels located in Bisseuil, Aÿ, and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. Her approach is based on a strong parcel reading, where each cuvée becomes the expression of a place, a grape variety, and a vintage. With La Meunière 2022, she highlights a grape variety long underestimated in Champagne, Pinot Meunier, working it with a logic of purity and terroir. This cuvée is part of a confidential and artisanal production, where every detail of the elaboration aims to reveal the identity of the wine without artifice. The choice of a single grape variety and a single parcel reflects a desire for precision and commitment. La Meunière thus embodies a contemporary vision of Champagne, where Meunier gains nobility and complexity.
The cuvée comes exclusively from the "Le Chaudron" parcel, planted in 1999 on the terroir of Bisseuil, with a full south exposure favorable to a beautiful ripeness of the grapes. The clay-limestone soils provide an interesting balance between richness and freshness, allowing the Meunier to express itself accurately. The juices come only from the cuvée, guaranteeing finesse and quality in the extraction. The vinification is carried out in 2.28 hl oak barrels, followed by aging on lees for ten months, bringing texture and complexity to the wine. True to a low-intervention approach, the champagne is unfiltered, retaining all its matter and natural energy. Offered as Brut Nature with only 1 g/l of residual sugar, it offers a direct and unadorned reading of the grape variety and vintage. Information regarding precise viticulture or possible sulfur use is not communicated and would deserve confirmation for a complete sheet.
On tasting, La Meunière 2022 reveals a profile both generous and precise, characteristic of great terroir Meuniers. The nose can express aromas of ripe yellow fruits, apple, pear, accompanied by slightly spicy and pastry nuances from barrel aging. The palate is ample and structured, with a beautiful body supported by well-integrated freshness that avoids any heaviness. The fine bubbles accompany the whole with elegance, while the finish, clean and slightly saline, extends the tasting with precision. The absence of dosage accentuates the sincerity and frankness of the wine, offering a pure and straightforward expression of Meunier. This champagne pairs ideally with roasted poultry, lightly sauced dishes, or generous and authentic seasonal cuisine. It will seduce enthusiasts looking for characterful champagnes, highlighting a grape variety still too rare in a parcel version.
