Champagne J-M Sélèque - Soliste - Pinot Noir - 1er Cru Les Gayères 2020
In Pierry, on the southern slopes of Épernay, Champagne J-M Sélèque has established itself as one of the most attentive grower estates to parcel-specific expression. The family history begins in the 1960s with Henri Sélèque, before Jean-Marc, the third generation, returned to the estate in 2008 with an approach based on expressing terroirs and natural balances. Today, the house works a mosaic of parcels spread over several communes, in this transitional zone between the Vallée de la Marne and Côte des Blancs where the soils mix clay, flint, and chalk. The Soliste range embodies one of the estate's most precise directions: isolating a parcel, a grape variety, and a vintage to reveal an unadorned identity. In this context, Les Gayères 2020 offers a unique interpretation of Pinot Noir from Pierry Premier Cru, far from the too broad or too opulent expressions of the variety. The cuvée highlights a wine of place, vinified with the ambition of a great wine, where the bubble becomes the natural extension of the matter. It is aimed at enthusiasts seeking in a blanc de noirs the depth of Pinot Noir, but also the freshness, precision, and tension of a terroir worked in detail.
This cuvée is made from 100% Pinot Noir from the lieu-dit Les Gayères, in Pierry Premier Cru, from vines planted in 1974. The parcel, located mid-slope, benefits from a west exposure and a slope of 10 to 15%, a context that favors a progressive maturity, less direct than on the sunniest exposures. The soils are composed of silty clays rich in calcite and flint, with an orange clay subsoil from the Ypresian crossed by fresh underground waters, with chalk found deeper down. This geology largely explains the style of the wine: the Pinot Noir retains a precise flesh but is held by an internal freshness that lengthens the palate. The vinification is carried out entirely in oak barrels of 350 to 600 liters for ten months, without fining or filtration, to preserve the grain and natural density of the wine. Aging under cork in natural cork lasts four years for the bottles, with an extra-brut dosage at 1.5 g/L that keeps the cuvée dry and clean. Produced in only 1,270 bottles and 120 magnums, this parcel expression has a real rarity, consistent with the precision of its origin.
The color reveals a light gold, slightly deepened, animated by a fine and regular effervescence. The nose opens on fresh raspberry, redcurrant, red cherry, and vine peach, then gains depth with nuances of dried flower, soft spices, light hazelnut, and wet stone. On the palate, the Pinot Noir gives an immediate presence but never massive, with a silky texture that the freshness of the lieu-dit quickly tightens. The bubble accompanies the wine without overwhelming it, bringing movement to a matter that is both ample, tense, and finely saline. The finish extends notes of tangy red fruits, candied citrus, wet chalk, and flint, in a precise and very gastronomic register. This champagne will naturally find its place with seared bluefin tuna, roasted pigeon, crispy sweetbreads, seared langoustines, supreme of poultry with morels, or aged Langres cheese. Served around 10 to 11°C in a fairly large glass, it will gain in relief as it aerates and can evolve in the cellar towards more notes of fine spices, undergrowth, and dried fruits.
