Château BRANAIRE-DUCRU - Duluc de Branaire Ducru 2020
Château Branaire-Ducru is one of the great names of Saint-Julien, in the heart of Médoc, on the left bank of Bordeaux. Classified as a Fourth Growth in 1855, it is based on a terroir of deep gravel on clay, close to the Gironde estuary, which favors the slow ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon and the natural elegance of the wines. The history of the estate is linked to the Duluc family, whose name remains associated with the property's second wine, Duluc de Branaire-Ducru. The vineyard, about 60 hectares, is worked with a pursuit of precision and environmental respect, within the framework of sustainable viticulture certified HVE and ISO 14001. In Saint-Julien, Branaire-Ducru stands out for a style less massive than some neighboring crus, but often recognized for its finesse, pure fruit, and the quality of its tannins. Duluc de Branaire-Ducru 2020 extends this signature in a more accessible expression, while maintaining the classic balance of the appellation.
Duluc de Branaire-Ducru 2020 is made from 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 5.5% Cabernet Franc, and 1.5% Petit Verdot. This composition places Cabernet Sauvignon at the center of the balance, with a confirmed Médoc structure, while Merlot brings more roundness and suppleness. The 2020 vintage was marked by a very mild and rainy winter, followed by a similarly wet spring, requiring significant vigilance against downy mildew. From the second half of June, drier conditions set in, before a hot summer that favored berry concentration and tannin ripening. The harvest, conducted from September 14 to 30, allowed the picking of perfectly healthy grapes, with balanced sugars and achieved phenolic maturity. This second wine from Saint-Julien thus expresses a complete profile, both structured, fruity, and already readable, with the expected precision of a great gravel terroir.
On tasting, Duluc de Branaire-Ducru 2020 presents a pure and precise nose, which opens on aeration to a beautiful range of black and red fruits. You can find blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherry, and spicier nuances, supported by a discreetly woody frame according to the wine's evolution. On the palate, the volume is pleasant, with material that unfolds gradually and a structure slightly tight in its youth. The tannins gain suppleness with aeration, revealing the typical elegance of Saint-Julien and a persistent aromatic freshness. The finish remains straight, balanced, and refined, without excess power, in a register more fine than demonstrative. This red Bordeaux will pair very well with a rack of lamb, a grilled rib steak, duck breast, roasted poultry with mushrooms, or a hard-ripened cheese. It can be appreciated after decanting but will gain harmony over several years in the cellar, with a aging horizon of about 8 to 15 years.
