Château Haut-Bergey - Magnum 2015
Château Haut Bergey is one of the most distinctive references of Pessac Léognan, driven by the vision of the Garcin family who have profoundly modernized the vineyard since the 1990s. Located in Léognan on a patchwork of gravel, sand, and clay, the estate benefits from a mosaic of soils and exposures that enrich the complexity of its wines. Converted to organic farming and then to biodynamics, the vineyard is worked with increased attention to soil life, natural cycles, and the precise ripeness of the grapes. The style of Haut Bergey red has refined over the vintages, moving from sometimes massive structures to a more slender expression, centered on the balance between depth and freshness. The 2015 vintage, one of Bordeaux's recent great classics, finds here an ideal expression ground to produce a Pessac Léognan for aging, elegant and intensely aromatic. Presented in magnum, it fully embodies the estate's ambition: to produce serious, finely crafted wines made for time.
Château Haut Bergey Magnum 2015 comes from a perfectly balanced blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot, vinified separately before the final blend. The harvest, carried out between September 17 and October 7, 2015, allowed the grapes to be picked at full maturity, with a controlled yield around forty-two hectoliters per hectare, a guarantee of concentration and precision. Fermentation takes place in small-volume, temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to respect the personality of each plot, then the wine is aged for eighteen months in French oak barrels, about half of which are new wood, bringing structure, spices, and complexity without overpowering the fruit. The choice of magnum enhances the aging potential, the large format offering a slower, more harmonious evolution, ideal to accompany the refinement of tannins and aromatic development over two to three decades. This 2015 magnum thus positions itself as a cellar cuvée par excellence, intended for enthusiasts who appreciate great Pessac Léognan at maturity.
On tasting, Château Haut Bergey Magnum 2015 shows a deep red robe with purple reflections, dense and luminous. The nose opens with an intense bouquet of blackcurrant, blackberry, and black plum, complemented by notes of licorice, mint, cedar, and a slight smoky woodiness from the aging. On the palate, the attack is ample and generous, supported by dense matter with velvety tannins, where juicy black fruits, crunchy red fruits, soft spices, and a fine chocolate touch intertwine. The structure remains straight, fresh, with verticality that stretches the finish and highlights the typical gravelly minerality of the appellation. The length impresses, marked by echoes of candied fruits, cocoa, and blond tobacco, making this 2015 a true wine for aging that a decanting will enhance in its youth. At the table, this magnum will beautifully accompany a matured rib steak, a roasted herb rack of lamb, duck with mild spices, a tournedos Rossini, or a platter of aged hard cheeses.
Grape varieties: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Merlot.
