Domaine Gallety - Cuvée Emma 2023
Located in Saint-Montan, in the south of Ardèche, Domaine Gallety is one of the most remarkable estates in the southern Rhône valley. Acquired by the Gallety family in 1974, the estate covers approximately 80 hectares where vineyards, woods, orchards, and scrubland coexist in a particularly preserved environment. Alain Gallety and his son David-Alexandre cultivate about 15 hectares of vines here, with a philosophy based on respect for life, yield control, and the pursuit of an authentic expression of the terroir. Situated on the limestone slopes of Vivarais, the vineyard benefits from a Mediterranean climate tempered by altitude and continental influences, promoting a gradual ripening of the grapes and a beautiful natural freshness. The Cuvée Emma holds a privileged place in the estate's range, between the indulgence of the Cuvée Gallety and the exceptional concentration of the great selections La Syrare and La Ligure. Derived from a parcel selection of old vines, it embodies a particularly refined interpretation of Grenache and Syrah, combining southern generosity with an elegant structure. Emma thus stands out for its aromatic depth, silky texture, and remarkable aging potential for a wine from this still too little-known region.
The 2023 Cuvée Emma is made from a blend of 60% Grenache Noir and 40% Syrah, coming from a selection of parcels on clay-limestone soils. The vines, about fifty to sixty years old, benefit from deep rooting that promotes regular water supply and helps preserve the balance of the grapes. The Gallety family favors naturally limited yields and manual harvesting, with careful selection of the maturity of both grape varieties. Traditional vinification takes place in concrete vats, a material that allows temperature control while preserving the aromatic purity of the fruit. Fermentations are conducted with indigenous yeasts, aiming for progressive extraction and tannic finesse rather than excessive power. The wine then benefits from an extended aging of 18 to 24 months in oak barrels, intended to refine its structure and develop its complexity without masking the terroir's identity. The 2023 vintage, marked in the southern Rhône by warm conditions and generous ripening, should offer a particularly harmonious expression, in which the richness of Grenache finds its balance in the freshness and depth of Syrah.
The 2023 Cuvée Emma should reveal a deep purple robe with violet reflections, announcing a wine of beautiful concentration. Its bouquet promises to be complex and expressive, combining blackberry, blackcurrant, and black cherry with nuances of violet, licorice, and sweet spices. Upon aeration, notes of thyme, rosemary, and black pepper could enrich this aromatic palette, while aging would bring subtle woody touches and additional depth. On the palate, the wine should combine ample and fleshy matter with a particularly silky texture, with ripe and finely integrated tannins. Grenache brings enveloping fruity generosity, while Syrah contributes structure, freshness, and an elegant spicy dimension. The finish promises to be long and persistent, marked by black fruits, garrigue, and a subtle mineral sensation that prolongs the tasting. Already charming in its youth after slight aeration, this cuvée also has a potential aging capacity of about fifteen years, during which it should develop aromas of undergrowth, fine leather, and truffle. It will ideally accompany grilled rib of beef, herb-crusted rack of lamb, duck breast, venison stew, or confit lamb shoulder.
