Domaine Maxime Renaudin 2023
Domaine Maxime Renaudin is one of the most discreet and closely followed new signatures in Languedoc. Located around Jonquières, in the heart of Hérault, Maxime Renaudin works a tiny vineyard of about five hectares on clay-limestone terroirs. His journey is inseparable from Laurent Vaillé, a legendary figure of La Grange des Pères, with whom he trained and who deeply influenced his vision of wine. This spiritual lineage is felt in the pursuit of balance, finesse, and depth, far from the overly massive or demonstrative Languedoc reds. Production remains extremely limited, making each vintage already a highly sought-after allocation by lovers of great Southern wines. Domaine Maxime Renaudin 2023 fits into this rare, artisanal, and demanding lineage, with a red that combines Mediterranean identity and great precision of touch. It is a discreet, almost secret bottle, intended for enthusiasts who follow emerging estates capable of leaving a lasting mark on their region.
The Domaine Maxime Renaudin 2023 cuvée comes from the emblematic grape varieties of the area, with a blend of Syrah, Carignan, and Grenache. Syrah brings aromatic depth, black fruits, violet, and spices, while Carignan provides tension, relief, and a true Mediterranean backbone. Grenache completes the ensemble with its flesh, fruit sweetness, and ability to round the mouth without weighing down the wine. The vines are worked with great care, without chemicals as indicated by available sources, in a quest to respect the soils and biodiversity. The grapes are fully destemmed, then vinified separately to preserve the identity of each variety before the final blend. The long aging, around 24 months in barrels, brings depth, patina, and a noble structure without seeking to dominate the fruit. The 2023 vintage seems particularly successful in this balance between intensity, limestone freshness, and aromatic precision.
Domaine Maxime Renaudin 2023 reveals a deep, elegant, and already very expressive red. The nose opens on blackberry, blackcurrant, black cherry, and plum, with nuances of violet, pepper, licorice, garrigue, and graphite. The palate is ample but perfectly controlled, supported by a silky texture and freshness that gives great length. The wine has the density of great Languedoc reds but with a grain finesse and precision reminiscent of the most sought-after estates in the area. The finish is long, spicy, slightly smoky, with a mineral sensation that prolongs the tasting. This 2023 deserves a few years in the cellar to reveal all its complexity but can already be appreciated after a good aeration. It will ideally accompany a rack of lamb, a matured rib steak, spiced duck, a Languedoc stew, a lamb tagine, or an aged cheese.
