Les Vignes Saint Vincent - Michel Delhommeau - Clos Armand 2023
Les Vignes Saint Vincent by Michel Delhommeau ranks among the benchmark estates of Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine. Located in Monnières, on the left bank of the Sèvre, the estate benefits from a Loire environment marked by oceanic freshness, ancient soils, and a strong geological identity. Michel Delhommeau took over the family estate at the end of the 1980s and has gradually developed a precise understanding of the terroirs of the Nantes vineyard. The estate works with certified organic farming, paying particular attention to soil vitality and the natural expression of Melon de Bourgogne. Clos Armand 2023 represents one of the most serious cuvées in the range, coming from a gabbro terroir that gives the wine more density and depth. This is not a simple or merely refreshing Muscadet, but a dry white wine of terroir, built on minerality, texture, and persistence. It perfectly illustrates the qualitative renewal of Muscadet, capable of producing precise, saline, and deeply Loire wines suitable for aging.
The Clos Armand 2023 cuvée is made exclusively from Melon de Bourgogne, the historic grape variety of Muscadet. The grapes come from old vines planted on gabbro soils, a dark magmatic rock that gives the wine a very particular mineral signature. This terroir generally produces Muscadet wines that are broader, more structured, and deeper than those from lighter soils. The harvest is done by hand to preserve the integrity of the grapes and allow a precise selection of the raw material. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, respecting the place and the vintage. Aging on lees in concrete tanks or underground vats adds texture, volume, and discreet complexity without ever masking the wine's natural tension. The 2023 vintage offers a very successful balance between flesh, freshness, and salinity, with a denser expression than a classic Muscadet.
In the glass, Les Vignes Saint Vincent Clos Armand 2023 reveals a clear, bright robe with pale yellow slightly golden reflections. The nose evokes lemon, fresh apple, crunchy pear, white flowers, and a very elegant iodized nuance. The palate is both ample and taut, with a denser body than the average Muscadet, but always perfectly held by freshness. Aging on lees brings a slightly creamy sensation, while the gabbro extends the finish on a stony, saline, and finely bitter framework. The whole remains pure, precise, and very digestible, with a beautiful energy that calls for food. This white wine will ideally accompany oysters, shellfish, grilled fish, citrus snapper, scallops, goat cheese, or aged Comté. Serve around 10 to 12°C in a fairly open glass to allow its mineral depth and lees texture to express themselves.
