Château LÉOVILLE POYFERRÉ - Magnum 2006
In Saint-Julien, Château Léoville Poyferré occupies part of the former Léoville estate, a vast Médoc property divided in the 19th century into several crus that have become emblematic today. The second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, the château has belonged to the Cuvelier family since 1920 and has gradually established itself with a style combining depth, richness of texture, and tannic precision. The vineyard mainly rests on beautiful Güns gravel mounds, particularly favorable to Cabernet Sauvignon, the grape variety that gives the wine its structure, freshness, and aging potential. Merlot complements this architecture with more flesh, while Petit Verdot occasionally enhances the color and spicy notes. The 2006 vintage, more classic than sunny, produced structured and fresh Cabernets in the Médoc, requiring more patience than the immediately seductive great years. With nearly twenty years of evolution, Léoville Poyferré 2006 is now beginning to fully reveal the finesse of its structure and the complexity acquired in the bottle. The magnum format here is an additional advantage, promoting slower maturation and prolonged preservation of freshness.
Château Léoville Poyferré 2006 blends 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot. The high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine a straight and persistent framework, marked by blackcurrant, graphite, and cedar. Merlot brings a more enveloping texture in the mid-palate and helps to gradually soften the wine's architecture. Petit Verdot completes the ensemble with peppery, floral, and spicy nuances that add more relief. The different plots are vinified separately to preserve their personality before composing the final blend. Aging in French oak barrels then accompanies a naturally deep structure and allows the tannins to polish over time. In magnum, the 2006 vintage still retains a beautiful reserve of fruit and can continue its evolution well beyond that of a standard bottle kept under the same conditions.
Today, the color shows a deep garnet with ruby nuances, with a still relatively discreet evolution thanks to the format. The nose combines blackcurrant, blackberry, and black plum with notes of cedar, graphite, and blond tobacco. Aeration gradually reveals fine leather, licorice, sweet spices, and delicate undergrowth nuances. The palate maintains a beautiful density, with now more polished tannins but still sufficiently present to support the body. Cabernet Sauvignon brings length and freshness, while Merlot adds more velvet and depth to the heart of the palate. The finish is persistent and precise, on black fruits, tobacco, spices, and a discreet mineral touch. This magnum of Château Léoville Poyferré 2006 will accompany a roasted rack of lamb, a beef fillet with cep mushrooms, pigeon, royal hare, or refined cuisine around black truffle.
