Château Maucaillou takes its name from an ancient expression, a contraction of bad and pebble. It designates the Garonne graves of Guntz, an ice age. If these soils are not favorable for cereals and other crops, for the vine, it is a treat. The castle was built in 1875 and this vineyard is one of the oldest in the Médoc.
Its geographical location is privileged: between Margaux and Saint Julien, in the town of Moulis, in the heart of Haut-Médoc. Today, it is Philippe Dourthe, helped by his son Pascal, who is at the head of the estate whose vines cover nearly 90 hectares planted with cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot. The harvest is manual and the management of the vineyard is reasoned, for a production of 600,000 bottles per year. For its vinifications, Château Maucaillou has the most modern equipment, which is often cited as an example. Philippe Dourthe likes to vinify at low temperature, for a precise and delicate extraction. Its wines are long on the palate and cut for aging. Two words come up often to define the Maucaillou style: finesse and richness.
