TOMATIN - 12 years old - 125th Anniversary - 43%
The Tomatin Distillery is one of Scotland 's largest distilleries, located in the Highlands near Inverness. Tomatin translates to "juniper hill": as juniper wood does not give off smoke when burning, it has long been used by illicit distillers who had to keep their practice secret, especially during Prohibition. Tomatin's remote location over 300 meters above sea level in the mountains of Monadhliath is surely due to the fact that the site had previously hosted a still where cattle herders stopped to fill their flasks. When the official distillery was founded in 1897, at the height of the whiskey boom, the location, although isolated, was convenient as it was next to a newly opened railway line, which connected the distillery at the market (and supply centre) of Inverness, and on an upland stream supplying fresh mountain water. Nevertheless, like many whiskey distilleries, the business suffered from the depression of 1900 and went bankrupt in 1906 before reopening in 1909 under new ownership. The collapse in demand for whiskey during the economic crisis of the 1980s led to the distillery going into liquidation, and many stills were dismantled. Two years later it was purchased by former customer Takaro Shuzo Ltd and distribution company Okura , both Japanese. Since that time Tomatin has been much more developed as a brand with an emphasis on quality rather than quantity, and a wider range of Single Malts.
the 12 years old is aged in a combination of Bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks . June 8, 2022 celebrates the 125th anniversary of the distillery. On this occasion, a collector's case was created for this edition.
