Aquila del Torre - Sauvignon Blanc 2019
Aquila del Torre is a family estate in Friuli, located in Savorgnano del Torre, in the province of Udine, in northeastern Italy. The vineyard stretches over hillsides surrounded by woods, in a preserved environment where alpine influences, currents from the Adriatic, and strong temperature variations give the whites remarkable freshness. The Ciani family works a mosaic of small terraced plots on flysch soils mixing marl and clay-textured sandstone. This Friulian geology gives the wines a dimension that is mineral, savory, and deeply rooted in their origin. The estate has been certified organic for several years and also follows a biodynamic approach, with particular attention to soil fertility and biodiversity. This 2019 Sauvignon Blanc perfectly illustrates this artisanal interpretation of Friuli, far from overly varietal or standardized expressions. It is a precise and luminous terroir white, combining aromatic freshness, lees texture, and beautiful mouth energy.
The 2019 Sauvignon Blanc cuvée is made exclusively from Sauvignon Blanc, a grape variety that finds in the Colli Orientali del Friuli a very interesting balance between aromatic intensity and mineral tension. The vines are planted on hillside terraces at altitudes generally between 175 and 300 meters, with varied exposures that preserve the fruit's brightness while achieving full ripeness. The harvest is done manually in small crates, with careful selection of the clusters to maintain the purity of the grape. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, mainly in stainless steel tanks, respecting the fruit and the place. Aging on lees, indicated around 10 months for this vintage, adds body, a velvety sensation, and discreet complexity without masking the freshness of the Sauvignon. The wine remains dry, clean, and expressive, with a deeper dimension than the simple aromatic profile of the variety. In the 2019 vintage, it offers a ripe, balanced, and already harmonious expression, ideal to discover the elegant style of Aquila del Torre.
In the glass, Aquila del Torre Sauvignon Blanc 2019 reveals a fresh, fruity, and finely textured profile. The nose opens with citrus, grapefruit, white peach, and fresh flowers, with a slightly exotic nuance recalling tropical fruits without excess. The palate is lively on the attack, then more ample, supported by lees aging which brings volume and an almost velvety sensation. The mineral and savory framework perfectly balances the fruit, giving the wine a clean, salivating, and persistent finish. With a few years of evolution, this Sauvignon can gain riper nuances around candied zest, fine herbs, and wet stone. It will pair very well with asparagus, eggs, vegetable soup, vegetable risotto, grilled fish, seafood, or fresh cheese. Serve around 10 to 12°C, in a medium-sized glass, to preserve its freshness while allowing its texture to express itself.
