Château LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 2022
In Pauillac, Château Lafite Rothschild occupies one of the most famous gravel ridges of the Médoc, in an environment where the proximity of the Gironde estuary helps moderate climatic extremes. The First Growth classified in 1855, the estate has belonged to the Rothschild family since 1868 and remains a global reference for the finesse, depth, and longevity of its wines. The fine and deep gravel soils, mixed with sands and resting in places on a limestone subsoil, offer the Cabernet Sauvignon a particularly favorable terroir for slow and complete ripening. The vineyard is managed with an extremely precise parcel-by-parcel approach, each lot being monitored independently until blending. The 2022 vintage, marked in Bordeaux by exceptional heat and drought, highlighted the ability of the old vines and great terroirs of Pauillac to preserve their balance. At Lafite, this sunny year did not produce a massive wine, but a remarkably controlled expression where concentration is supported by deep freshness. The result combines intensity, aromatic distinction, and that sensation of lift which has long been one of the most recognizable traits of the estate.
Château Lafite Rothschild 2022 blends 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. This exceptional proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine a very straight architecture, with dense but extraordinarily precise matter. Merlot is used in small quantity to bring flesh and suppleness to the mid-palate, while Petit Verdot completes the blend with a spicy touch and additional depth. The maturity reached in 2022 allowed for concentrated berries, but the rigorous selection of parcels and mastery of extraction preserved the finesse of the tannic grain. The different lots are vinified separately before only the most accomplished expressions are selected for the grand vin. Aging in French oak barrels accompanies this structure for many months, gradually refining the tannins without masking the purity of the fruit. Still profoundly young, the 2022 possesses a concentration and energy that promise several decades of evolution.
The color shows an extremely deep purple, almost opaque at the core, with still bright violet reflections. The bouquet develops in successive touches around blackcurrant, blackberry, and black cherry, accompanied by violet, graphite, and fine cedar. On aeration, nuances of licorice, blond tobacco, cocoa, and spices appear, never diverting attention from the purity of the fruit. The palate impresses less by volume than by the precision of its construction, with very fine tannins that give a sensation of continuous depth. The Cabernet Sauvignon unfolds a fresh, mineral, and persistent framework, while the maturity of the vintage brings a particularly enveloping texture. The finish extends with remarkable length on blackcurrant, graphite, flowers, spices, and a discreet smoky touch. Château Lafite Rothschild 2022 will accompany a filet of beef with porcini mushrooms, a roasted rack of lamb, pigeon, veal with morels, or refined cuisine around black truffle.
