Domaine Alex Moreau - Chassagne Montrachet 2023
Domaine Alex Moreau is located in Chassagne-Montrachet, in the heart of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy, one of the most renowned villages for great white wines made from Chardonnay. The estate originates from the division of the famous Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils, a family property whose history dates back to the early 19th century. Since 2020, Alexandre Moreau has been managing part of the family vineyard alone, continuing a winemaking tradition spanning several generations while asserting a precise and contemporary style. The estate cultivates about six hectares spread over several climats of Chassagne-Montrachet and neighboring appellations, with particular attention paid to expressing the clay-limestone terroirs of the Côte de Beaune. These typical Burgundy vineyard soils favor wines that are both structured and mineral, capable of combining richness and tension. In this communal appellation recognized since 1937, white wines largely dominate production and embody the identity of Burgundy Chardonnay. The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet from the estate illustrates this approach by highlighting the precision and purity characteristic of Alex Moreau's style.
This 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet is made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes coming from several plots located on the heights of the village, often southeast-facing and resting on clay-limestone soils mixed with limestone scree. These terroirs allow obtaining grapes with balanced ripeness while preserving a natural acidity essential to the wine's harmony. The harvest is carried out carefully to preserve the integrity of the clusters and the aromatic finesse of the grape variety. After gentle pressing, fermentation takes place in oak barrels with an approach aimed at supporting the expression of the terroir rather than masking it. Aging generally continues between twelve and fifteen months in barrels, with a limited proportion of new wood to preserve the purity of the fruit. This slow maturation helps structure the wine while developing its texture and complexity. The whole results in a Chassagne-Montrachet that favors balance between density, mineral tension, and aromatic finesse.
On tasting, the 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet from Alex Moreau reveals an elegant bouquet where aromas of pear, white flowers, and citrus zest mingle, accompanied by nuances of hazelnut and delicate brioche. The palate is distinguished by a broad and silky texture, supported by a lively acidity that brings dynamism and precision. Flavors evoke white peach, ripe lemon, and sometimes a subtle note of toasted almond that appears with aeration. The balance between richness of matter and mineral tension gives the wine a harmonious structure and beautiful depth. The finish, long and salivating, reveals a slight saline touch that highlights the limestone origin of the terroir. This Chassagne-Montrachet pairs particularly well with noble fish, shellfish, roasted poultry, or mushroom-based dishes. Thanks to its structure and aging, it also has aging potential that will allow it to gain complexity with a few years in the cellar.
