Hegoxuri 2023 from Domaine Arretxea is a great white wine from Irouléguy, made from steep slopes in the Basque Country, planted on soils mixing red sandstone and schist, at the foot of the Pyrenees. The estate, managed biodynamically by the Riouspeyrous family, has been dedicated for several decades to reviving this mountain vineyard by favoring artisanal viticulture, measured yields, and a very precise reading of each micro-terroir. The estate's emblematic cuvée, whose name means 'white of the South' in Basque, Hegoxuri blends gros manseng, petit manseng, and petit courbu from complementary plots to offer a wine that is both ample, deep, and marked by a pronounced mineral tension. The 2023 vintage, bright but without excessive heat, allowed for slow and homogeneous ripening, preserving a beautiful natural acidity and a very clear aromatic profile, ideal for this style of gastronomic white. On the nose, Hegoxuri 2023 reveals a complex bouquet of ripe citrus fruits, yellow and exotic fruits, candied lemon, kumquat, and pineapple, enhanced by delicate floral notes, a smoky touch, and fine honeyed nuances. The palate is ample and generous, with a beautiful richness of texture supported by a straight acidic framework that stretches the body and enhances the wine's salivating dimension. The minerality coming from the schist and sandstone plots brings a precise, almost chalky relief that balances the richness of the mansengs and gives the wine a striking length. There is a succession of flavors of juicy white fruits, zesty citrus, fine spices, and fruit kernels, in a style that is both indulgent and deeply structured, promising aging potential of several years. The aging in demi-muids and large oak casks, on lees, refines the grain without ever dominating the wine's profile, enhancing its tactile dimension and aromatic complexity. At the table, Hegoxuri 2023 will be a natural partner for grilled or raw fish, river fish, white meats in creamy sauces, seared foie gras, or aged sheep's cheese, where its density and tension will find an ideal echo. It can also accompany more elaborate seafood cuisine, around shellfish, crustaceans, or iodized preparations, which its salinity and energy will perfectly highlight. This terroir white, designed to defy time, will find its place in an enthusiast's cellar, with an estimated aging potential of eight to ten years, during which it will develop more honeyed, spicy, and slightly truffled notes without losing its freshness. Clos des Millésimes Bordeaux offers Hegoxuri 2023 in a carefully selected range dedicated to rare wines and committed estates, highlighting the uniqueness of Irouléguy and the precision of the work carried out at Domaine Arretxea. This bottle is aimed at lovers of great whites from the Southwest who seek deep, distinctive wines perfectly suited to gastronomy, while maintaining great drinkability.

Domaine Arretxea - Hegoxuri 2023

Hegoxuri 2023 from Domaine Arretxea embodies the noblest and most ambitious dimension of Irouléguy whites, a cuvée that combines density, tension, and aromatic expression of great purity. The pale gold, bright color announces a wine of stature but with great finesse. The nose opens with precise aromas of ripe lemon, pear, white peach, and discreet exotic fruits, mingled with notes of white flowers, wild fennel, and warm stone. One can already perceive the depth of the terroir blending schist and sandstone, which brings a vibrant minerality to the bouquet. On the palate, the attack is ample, supported by a pure fruit perfectly balanced by ripe acidity. The texture, dense yet slender, unfolds with a delicate touch and remarkable freshness. The long, saline finish extends with accents of citrus, fine herbs, and a noble bitterness.

Upon aeration, Hegoxuri 2023 gains complexity and reveals subtle nuances of anise, star anise, grapefruit zest, and fresh almond. The texture becomes more enveloping but remains traversed by a mineral tension that structures the wine and gives it striking verticality. The gentle vinification, with slow pressing and natural fermentations, followed by perfectly controlled aging in large oak vats and demi-muids, brings precision and depth without ever weighing down the texture. Every detail seems calibrated to maintain the balance between breadth and aromatic brilliance. The wine breathes sincerity and mastery of the estate, committed to organic and biodynamic viticulture where terroir expression is paramount. Hegoxuri 2023 thus appears as a white of great stylistic maturity, vibrant, pure, and remarkably coherent.

At the table, Hegoxuri 2023 shows exceptional gastronomic versatility. It will elevate a roasted noble fish, pike-perch or sea bass with beurre blanc, shellfish, scallops, free-range poultry with citrus, or a risotto with herbs and morels. Its mineral freshness and aromatic elegance also make it an ideal companion for refined plant-based cuisine: white asparagus, braised fennel, roasted root vegetables, young or aged sheep’s milk cheeses. Already sumptuous in its youth thanks to its brilliance and precision, it has a beautiful aging potential that will reveal notes of dry honey, dried fruits, beeswax, and fine spices while retaining its tension. It is a great white from Irouléguy, built on purity, depth, and minerality, which brilliantly illustrates the rigor and sensitivity of Arretxea.
