Domaine Danjou Banessy - Rancio 2000
The Domaine Danjou-Banessy is located in Espira-de-l’Agly, in Roussillon, at the heart of a Catalan landscape marked by Mediterranean light, schists, marls, and limestone soils. Benoît and Sébastien Danjou are now recognized as major winemakers in their region, capable of producing both great dry wines and rare, deep, contemplative cuvées. Their work is based on an intimate understanding of the terroirs, great precision in aging, and an artisanal approach that allows time to shape the wines. With this Rancio 2000, the domaine enters another dimension, that of meditation wines, designed for slowness, complexity, and emotion. This type of wine belongs to an ancient Mediterranean tradition, where oxidative aging becomes a true tool of expression. The white grape varieties aged under a veil develop here a unique aromatic depth, between power, salinity, concentration, and mystery. Domaine Danjou-Banessy Rancio 2000 thus presents itself as a rare bottle, almost timeless, intended for lovers of great oxidative wines and profound sensations.
This Rancio 2000 is born from white grape varieties worked in aging under a veil, a method reminiscent of some great Jura wines or even Sherry wines. This prolonged contact with air, controlled by the presence of the veil, develops a very particular aromatic palette, made of nuts, spices, dried fruits, and roasted notes. The 2000 vintage brings additional depth here, reinforced by remarkable concentration linked to evaporation during aging. The indicated yield of 6 hl/ha reflects the intensity of this matter, where each drop seems to carry a strong density of dry extracts. The balance rests on a fascinating opposition between the creaminess of the attack and the lively acidity of the finish. The wine does not seek the immediate freshness of a classic white, but a slow, almost meditative complexity, made of successive aromatic layers. This cuvée embodies a rare form of craftsmanship, where patience and mastery of oxidation become the foundations of a great characterful wine.
On tasting, Domaine Danjou-Banessy Rancio 2000 offers a nose of exceptional richness, evoking walnut, coffee, licorice, incense, raisins, fig, mocha, cocoa, and curry. The whole forms a true aromatic firework, both deep, spicy, roasted, and intensely Mediterranean. On the palate, the attack is dense, creamy, and enveloping, carried by the natural concentration of the wine and the intensity of its aging. The matter is ample, almost tactile, but the acidic finish cuts with precision and gives momentum back to this power. Notes of dried fruits, oriental spices, bitter cocoa, and coffee prolong the tasting for a long time. This wine will ideally accompany the end of a meal, an aged Comté, a blue cheese, a walnut dessert, a fig tart, intense dark chocolate, or simply a moment of meditation among enthusiasts. It is a bottle for conversation, slowness, and depth, capable of taking guests towards a rare expression of the Mediterranean art of living.
