Domaine Pierre Gonon - Saint Joseph Blanc - Les Oliviers 2021
Domaine Pierre Gonon is located in Mauves, Ardèche, in the heart of the Saint-Joseph appellation in the northern Rhône valley. A family-owned estate for several generations, the domaine is now managed by brothers Jean and Pierre Gonon, who have elevated this estate among the essential references of the appellation. The vineyard stretches over steep granite slopes overlooking the Rhône, where vine cultivation requires precise manual work. The soils, a mix of decomposed granite and red clays, contribute to giving the wines a mineral structure and great aromatic finesse. The estate is managed organically with a very respectful approach to life, without seeking unnecessary technical effects. This philosophy aims to produce sincere wines that faithfully reflect their terroir and vintage. The Les Oliviers cuvée, from a named place located south of Tournon, represents one of the estate's emblematic white wines and illustrates Saint-Joseph's ability to produce great gastronomic white wines.
The Saint-Joseph Blanc Les Oliviers 2021 is made from a blend dominated by Marsanne complemented by Roussanne, two traditional grape varieties of the appellation. The vines are planted on granite soils mixed with clays, favoring both fruit ripeness and the preservation of a beautiful natural tension. Harvesting is done relatively late to achieve an optimal balance between richness and freshness. After a slow and careful pressing, fermentation takes place in oak barrels, followed by about eleven months aging on fine lees in used barrels, with complete malolactic fermentation. This vinification allows the development of a broad texture while preserving the aromatic precision of the wine. The whole gives birth to a structured white wine, marked by the balance between generosity and freshness, characteristic of great Saint-Joseph whites.
On the palate, Les Oliviers 2021 reveals a complex nose combining notes of white flowers, yellow fruits, and citrus, accompanied by nuances of honey and almond. The mouth is distinguished by a broad and creamy texture, carried by a beautiful energy that balances the richness of the wine. The flavors evoke ripe pear, yellow apple, and lemon, with a slightly spicy dimension that adds depth. The whole develops with precision, supported by a mineral framework and noble bitters that prolong the tasting. The finish, long and persistent, confirms the gastronomic potential of the wine and its ability to evolve over time. This Saint-Joseph blanc ideally accompanies scallops, noble fish, or refined poultry dishes.
