Marchesi Antinori - Solaia 2012
In the heart of Chianti Classico, Solaia is born on the Tenuta Tignanello, the historic estate of the Antinori family located between the valleys of the Greve and the Pesa. The vineyard that gives it its name covers about twenty hectares facing southwest, between approximately 350 and 400 meters in altitude. Its stony soils, dominated by alberese and galestro, ensure effective drainage and contribute to the depth as well as the natural tension of the wine. Created in 1978, this cuvée has gradually established itself as one of the major expressions of modern Tuscany by combining Bordeaux grape varieties and Sangiovese. Cabernet Sauvignon forms its backbone, while Sangiovese brings a more Mediterranean energy and a freshness characteristic of the terroir. Cabernet Franc completes the ensemble with a more floral and spicy dimension. The 2012 vintage, marked by a warm and relatively dry season, produces a dense and generous Solaia, but whose richness remains balanced by the altitude and the limestone nature of the soils.
Solaia 2012 blends 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese, and 5% Cabernet Franc. The three grape varieties are harvested according to their own ripening rhythm and then vinified separately to preserve their respective characteristics. Cabernet Sauvignon brings structure, depth, and persistence, with a particularly pronounced register of black fruits and spices. Sangiovese introduces more liveliness, freshness, and relief, while Cabernet Franc refines the whole with its more delicate aromatic nuances. The vinifications seek a progressive extraction of color and tannins to maintain a precise texture despite the natural concentration of the vintage. Aging in French oak barrels then accompanies the structure of the wine and allows a gradual integration of wood, fruit, and tannins. After more than a decade in bottle, the 2012 today shows a beautiful harmony while retaining enough substance to continue its evolution.
The color shows a deep garnet with still strong ruby reflections. The bouquet combines blackberry, blackcurrant, and black cherry with hints of violet, tobacco, and cocoa. Aeration gradually reveals cedar, sweet spices, licorice, and a balsamic dimension that brings freshness to the whole. The palate is ample and generous, with softened tannins today that give the wine a velvety texture without erasing its structure. Cabernet Sauvignon imparts depth and length, while Sangiovese brings tension that energizes the mid-palate and balances the ripeness of the fruit. The finish lingers on black fruits, bitter chocolate, spices, and fine mineral nuances. Solaia 2012 will accompany a beef fillet with porcini mushrooms, a roasted rack of lamb, pigeon, feathered game, or refined cuisine around black truffle.
