Wasenhaus - Bellen - Spätburgunder 2023
The Wasenhaus estate, led by Christoph and Alexander Wißler, is one of the major references in the Baden region for the fine and demanding interpretation of Spätburgunder. Based in Staufen, the two brothers have built their identity around a very precise reading of the terroirs, with an approach inspired by the great European Pinot Noirs while asserting their own personality. Their work is based on understanding the soils, rigorous selection of plant material, and measured vinification, always serving elegance and drinkability. Wasenhaus has established itself with wines that are clear, deep, and never showy, where each cuvée corresponds to a clearly defined origin. Bellen represents one of the most accomplished expressions of this parcel-based approach.
The cuvée Bellen – Spätburgunder 2023 comes from two parcels located in Kirchhofen and Pfaffenweiler, on clay-limestone soils. The vines are planted from French and German clones, complemented by Burgundian massal selections, bringing complexity and aromatic diversity. Situated on a steep slope with a west-facing exposure, they benefit from late sunshine favorable to gradual ripening. Fermentation takes place with 40% whole clusters in wooden vats, to bring structure and depth without losing the finesse of the fruit. The wine is then aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, with a precise and restrained use of wood. Bellen embodies an ambitious and structured reading of Spätburgunder at Wasenhaus.
On the palate, Bellen 2023 stands out for its controlled intensity and balance. The nose reveals ripe red and black fruits, cherry and raspberry, complemented by fine spicy notes and a deeper touch brought by the whole cluster harvest. The mouth is ample, structured, and energetic, supported by fine tannins and a beautiful freshness that stretches the texture. The whole retains great elegance despite the density, with a long, precise, and persistent finish. This wine ideally accompanies roasted meats, lamb, gourmet cuisine or more elaborate dishes, while offering real aging potential. A Spätburgunder with character, serious and classy, fully illustrating the estate's parcel ambition.
