Wasenhaus - Kalk - Spätburgunder 2023
The Wasenhaus estate is run by Christoph and Alexander Wißler, two winemaker brothers based in Staufen, in the Baden region, and today recognized as major figures in the revival of German Spätburgunder. Trained at reference estates in Burgundy, they have developed a demanding and sensitive approach to Pinot Noir, based on finesse, precision, and expression of the soils. The estate works on a small scale, with particular attention paid to the clarity of the cuvées and the natural balance of the wines. Each Wasenhaus cuvée corresponds to a specific origin or intention, reflecting the diversity of terroirs in southern Baden. Kalk embodies their interpretation of the limestone soils of the Markgräflerland.
The cuvée Kalk – Spätburgunder 2023 comes from several parcels located in the Markgräflerland, characterized by limestone soils. The grapes are vinified with about one third whole clusters, then fermented in wooden vats, to bring complexity and structure while preserving the elegance of the fruit. The wine is then aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, with a measured approach to support, without seeking excessive oak influence. This cuvée highlights a more mineral and structured expression of Pinot Noir, while remaining faithful to the estate's fluid and precise style. Kalk positions itself as a serious and refined interpretation of Spätburgunder on limestone.
On the palate, Kalk 2023 stands out for its balance and natural tension. The nose opens with clear red fruits, cherry and redcurrant, complemented by finer and slightly spicy notes. The palate is straight, precise, and structured, supported by fine tannins and marked freshness that extends the tasting. The influence of limestone is expressed through a sensation of uprightness and length, giving the wine great energy and clarity. The finish is persistent, elegant, and very digestible. This wine pairs ideally with roasted poultry, white meats, refined vegetarian cuisine, or dishes with delicate flavors. A terroir-driven Spätburgunder, precise and elegant, designed as much for the table as for attentive tasting.
