Wasenhaus - Vulkan - Spätburgunder 2023
The Wasenhaus estate, led by Christoph and Alexander Wißler, has established itself as one of the most followed projects in the Baden region of Germany. Based in Staufen, the two brothers work exclusively with Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) with a commitment inspired by the great European terroir wines, while asserting a deeply German identity. Their approach is based on finesse, precision, and clarity of the cuvées, with particular attention paid to soils and natural balances. Wasenhaus is now recognized for its ability to offer elegant, taut, and digestible Pinot Noirs, far from any pursuit of excessive power. Each cuvée reflects a specific stage or origin in their interpretation of the grape variety.
The cuvée Vulkan – Spätburgunder 2023 comes from two distinct parcels located on the Kaiserstuhl, characterized by volcanic soils. The vines, still quite young, produce grapes oriented towards freshness and precision rather than concentration. The grapes are mostly destemmed, with 40% whole cluster, then fermented in open vats for 18 days to gently extract while preserving the elegance of the fruit. Aging continues for 15 months in used barrels, without seeking oak imprint, in a spirit of support and texture. This cuvée holds an intermediate position in the range, highlighting the volcanic expression of Pinot Noir while remaining true to the estate’s fluid and precise style.
On the palate, Vulkan 2023 offers a Spätburgunder that is both expressive and balanced. The nose opens with clean red fruits, cherry and raspberry, accompanied by slightly spicy notes and a darker touch that adds depth. The palate is upright, structured but always fluid, supported by fine tannins and a lovely freshness. The volcanic influence is expressed through a sensation of tension and energy, which stretches the tasting without weighing down the body. The finish is clean, persistent, and very digestible. This wine pairs perfectly with roast poultry, white meats, refined vegetarian cuisine, or carefully prepared bistro dishes. A precise and lively Pinot Noir, both accessible and serious.
Grape variety: 100% Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder)
