Wittmann - Morstein Grosse Gewächs 2019
Weingut Wittmann is located in Westhofen, in the Wonnegau district of the wine-growing region of Rheinhessen, Germany. The Wittmanns have been winegrowers since the 17th century. It is now managed by Günter, Elisabeth, Eva Clüsserath and Philipp Wittmann. The estate has been certified organic since 1990 and biodynamic since 2004.
After the harvest, the grapes are sorted and selected in the winery, before being gently pressed. The juice flows by gravity down into the cellar. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts. The wines are aged in the vaulted cellar that was built in 1829, in eighty wooden casks. The oldest of these barrels is from 1890 and every cask contains the harvest of a single vineyard parcel.
The site of Morstein is a south-facing slope rising to a high plateau at 280 metres above sea level and is the first single vineyard to be mentioned officially in Westhofen in 1282. VDP.GROSSE LAGE® is the designation for the highest quality vineyards in Rheinhessen, sites that are precisely delineated by parcel. Here the finest wines are grown, with expressive vineyard character and special potential for cellaring. The Morstein GG is made with Riesling hand-harvested and fully destemmed. The grapes undergo a short skin contact before the fermentation in foudres.
Grape variety: 100% Riesling
