Masseto - Massetino 2020
Masseto is one of the most famous Super-Tuscan wines, made entirely from Merlot by the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia . Ornellaia is located in the Bolgheri appellation, in Tuscany , Italy . The company was founded in 1981 by Marquis Lodovico Antinori. From 2002 to 2005, the estate was co-owned by Robert Mondavi and Marchesi De Frescobaldi but, since 2005, Frescobaldi has sole ownership. In Ornellaia, the notion of environmental sustainability, understood as the use of the natural fertility of the soil, can be identified in various practices and limited measures implemented in the vineyards, with the aim of favoring the biodiversity of cultivated species. Masseto's estate manager is Axel Heinz .
Massetino is the " second wine ", born after the selection made for Masseto but which shares the same identity. After destemming and light pressing, the grapes were transferred to concrete vats by gravity, without pumping. Each lot from the vineyard was vinified separately. Fermentation took place spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, with two to three pumping overs per day and delestages if necessary. The grape macerated between 21 and 25 days in vats. The malolactic fermentation took place in barrels, with 50% new oak. After the first 12 months of aging , the wine was blended and reintroduced in barrels for 3 more months , before bottling.
