There are two techniques for growing Zinfandel in the Dry Creek Valley. One is traditional farming practices and includes dry-cultivation of mature, goblet-pruned vines that are severely thinned in the spring to produce low yields. The other method uses bilateral cord pruning, wire training, drip irrigation, and carefully tended canopies. The Francis Ford Coppola Winery sources its Zinfandel from vineyards grown in these two ways. The wine is aged for 15 months entirely in oak barrels, with 30% new French oak and 10% American oak . With its unique wraparound label modeled after a Zoetrope tape, one of the very first moving image devices, each Director's Cut label is a replica of a tape from Francis' personal Zoetrope collection.
