Mount Gay Rum is produced by Mount Gay Distilleries Ltd. from Barbados , West Indies. Dating back to 1703, it is the oldest commercial rum distillery in the world. The business throughout the 20th century was owned by the Ward family in the parish of St. Peter. The Ward family resides in the northernmost parish of St. Lucia, where they own extensive farms. The current majority shareholder of Mount Gay Distilleries since 1989 is Rémy Cointreau.
Mount Gay rum is made from molasses and water filtered through natural coral. This mixture is fermented using exclusively selected yeast, then distilled in copper stills and column stills, before being aged in oak barrels. To make this Black Barrel , Master Blender Trudiann Branker used a blend of rums distilled in copper and column stills, aged in American whiskey barrels and finished in charred Bourbon barrels .
