Armagnac Laterrade - Bas-Armagnac - 1985 - Domaine de La Coste Lacourtoisie - Cask Strength - 40.6%
The Armagnacs Laterrade revive a discreet part of the Gascon heritage: that of eaux-de-vie long kept in family cellars, far from standardized blends. A trained sommelier and a keen connoisseur of his region, Vincent Laterrade built his collection by visiting estates in search of old casks whose origin could be precisely traced. Each vintage thus remains associated with the property that produced it, so that time does not erase either the place or the history of the harvest. The Domaine de La Coste Lacourtoisie is located in Labastide-d’Armagnac, in the Landes, within the Bas-Armagnac zone. This western sector of the appellation is notably marked by sandy and silty soils, favorable to the production of eaux-de-vie appreciated for their aromatic finesse and aging potential. The house accompanies these lots with restraint, without trying to impose a reproducible profile. This approach gives rise to confidential bottlings, chosen as much for their personality as for the viticultural memory they carry.
Exclusively from the 1985 harvest, this Armagnac comes from the Domaine de La Coste Lacourtoisie and is not the result of any blending between different vintages. After the distillation of the wine, the eau-de-vie continued its maturation in wood for several decades, at the pace of slow exchanges between the alcohol, the oak, and the atmosphere of the cellar. Such a duration favors the gradual transformation of the fruit, which little by little leaves its primary register to gain nuances of dried fruits, spices, cocoa, and polished wood. The natural strength of 40.6% testifies to a long evolution in cask, during which evaporation slowly lowered the alcoholic strength while concentrating the aromatic matter. Bottling at cask strength respects this balance acquired during aging, without reduction intended to artificially adjust the degree. No unconfirmed detail concerning the grape variety or the precise nature of the barrels distracts here from the essential: an identified estate, a single year, and a singular evolution. This transparent reading of the vintage fully corresponds to the selection work defended by Vincent Laterrade.
The color unfolds in a deep amber, lit with copper and mahogany highlights. The nose opens gently on prune, roasted apricot, and candied orange peel, then evolves towards walnut, cocoa, and beeswax. A few minutes of aeration reveal a more earthy register, mixing blond tobacco, fine leather, cinnamon, and old wood. On the palate, the 40.6% offers a particularly tempered attack, supported by a velvety texture rather than strength. The stewed fruits join the roasted almond, mild coffee, and brown spices, with a discreet freshness that keeps the whole in motion. The finish extends on walnut, dried zest, and a delicate rancio, in a warm but never burning sensation. This 1985 Armagnac will be best served neat in a tulip glass, after a few minutes of rest, or alongside a walnut tart, a lightly sweetened dark chocolate dessert, roasted prunes, or an aged Comté cheese.
