Bret Brothers - La Soufrandière - Le Clos de Grand Père 2023
The Domaine de la Soufrandière is located in Vinzelles, in the heart of the Mâconnais, in the south of Burgundy, a region renowned for the quality of its white wines made from Chardonnay. The estate has belonged to the Bret family for several generations and is now run by brothers Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret, who have profoundly renewed the estate's approach since the 2000s. The vineyard is managed organically and biodynamically, with particular attention paid to soil life and the precise expression of the limestone terroirs of the Mâconnais. Alongside the family estate, the Bret brothers created the Bret Brothers house, a demanding trading project that selects grapes from rigorously chosen plots. The Le Clos de Grand Père cuvée comes from a small historic plot located in Vinzelles, whose clay-limestone soils contribute to the mineral signature of the wines. This cuvée illustrates the Bret brothers' desire to produce precise and readable wines, highlighting the purity of Burgundian Chardonnay. The 2023 vintage fits into this approach by revealing a balanced and bright expression of the terroir.
Le Clos de Grand Père 2023 is made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes from a walled plot, a common feature of Burgundy's clos vineyards that promote a particular microclimate. The vines are planted on typical clay-limestone soils of the Mâconnais, which provide both structure and freshness to the wine. The grapes are harvested at maturity to preserve the natural richness of the variety while maintaining good acidity. After gentle pressing, fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts in a low-intervention approach aimed at respecting the terroir's identity. The aging continues for several months on fine lees, generally in oak barrels or neutral containers, to develop the wine's texture while preserving its aromatic precision. This patient work results in a balanced Chardonnay that favors finesse over power. Overall, it highlights a pure and elegant expression of the Vinzelles vineyard.
On the palate, Le Clos de Grand Père 2023 reveals a precise nose dominated by aromas of white-fleshed fruits, ripe pear and apple, accompanied by notes of citrus and white flowers. The mouth is distinguished by a texture that is both ample and dynamic, supported by a clear acidity that brings freshness and tension. Flavors of ripe lemon, white peach, and orchard fruits blend with a slightly mineral nuance evoking wet stone. The balance rests on the combination of the natural roundness of Chardonnay and a saline framework that extends the sensation of freshness. The finish, long and precise, reveals a subtle touch of almond and citrus zest. This white Burgundy pairs particularly well with grilled fish, shellfish, roasted poultry, or pressed-paste cheeses. In its youth, it seduces with its freshness and gourmandise, while possessing an aging potential that will allow it to gain complexity with a few years of cellaring.
